What is co-managed IT?

Co-managed IT means your internal IT person keeps ownership of priorities and institutional knowledge, while an MSP supplies after-hours coverage, specialists, and a documented bench.

The problem co-managed solves

One strong internal IT person is often enough until they take vacation, hit a security incident, or face three projects at once. Hiring a second full-time specialist is expensive. Doing nothing leaves a single point of failure.

Co-managed IT keeps that person in the role they do best: knowing the business and setting priorities. The provider adds capacity and specialties without replacing them.

How responsibilities usually split

Internal lead: business priorities, institutional knowledge, vendor relationships they want to keep, and day-to-day judgment calls.

Provider: service desk depth, monitoring, after-hours coverage, documentation standards, and specialists for networking, Microsoft, security, and projects.

When fully managed is simpler

If there is no internal IT person, fully managed is cleaner. One agreement, one team, one documentation set. Co-managed shines when you already have someone good and need a bench behind them.

Questions & answers

Questions on this topic

Short answers for buyers comparing options.

Will you take over and push our person out?

That is not the model. Co-managed only works if roles stay clear. We document the split during onboarding.

Is co-managed priced differently?

Primary plans still apply. Scope of what the internal person handles is agreed in the engagement so ticket ownership is not ambiguous.
